Cheering on the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field is where you see the entire city come alive. What does it really mean to be an Eagles’ fan? We asked three diehards about their experiences going to Eagles games and what they love about the Linc, in their own words.
“This year at the Linc there is a new kind of electricity in the air. It’s the kind of electricity you would use to describe the hype of the Chip Kelly-era now in its second year. Being one of the few teams left in the NFL without a Super Bowl win, and for that matter a city that yearns every year for a professional sports championship, we really believe that this year can be our year week-in and week-out. Eagles fans truly believe they are a part of the wins and losses this team experiences on the field. As you come down the highway off I-76 and you begin to see the Broad Street complex that is the nexus of Philadelphia professional sports center, an adult’s playground, the excitement builds, the anticipation for kickoff is almost tangible, and the possibility of victory is the highest it’s been in years. Now, surely, no game day is complete without the soft pretzels, the Tony Luke’s or whatever cheesesteak you prefer (Jim’s on South Street is far and away the most unsung and the best), waiting in line for Chickie’s & Pete’s crab fries. But what you don’t see, what you can’t taste, but what is ever present, is the steadfast loyalty and camaraderie among fans and the belief that this year could really be ‘the year’.” -JM, US Army, Philadelphia PA
“I would have to say my favorite part of the Linc is the atmosphere even before you step foot on stadium grounds, however, the copious variety of food and beer never disappoint. We have anything from your typical soft pretzels and hot dogs to delicately handcrafted restaurant sandwich selections and almost everything in between. It seems as though every year, the Linc opens a new establishment that quickly becomes the new fan fave. Even if we don’t have a winning season, at least our stomachs will always be happy.” NF, Nurse, Philadelphia PA
“I take true pride knowing that the stadium is filled with the most hated fans in the league. Growing up going to the games, I have seen how it’s a battlefield literally on the field and atmosphere around the entire stadium. It’s such a cut throat energy that gets everyone so pumped to win. I know it sounds so gruesome… but that’s what makes the stadium come alive. There is such a sense of unity and pride. Even when times were tough for the team, the loyalty of the city never died and game after game we all showed up. Chip Kelly recently made a statement about wanting to be one of the most feared stadiums to visit and I think Philly is very close to that. All in all, my favorite part of going to the games is definitely the energy and atmosphere. I could honestly talk about that for days. When you first enter the stadium, you can easily be overwhelmed with all the activities going on. The WIP sports radio station is awesome. They bring the Eagle out where fans can see how majestic the symbol of our country is, there’s live music on the stage and tons of food trucks. I definitely love to hang out around there when I first get to the nest. Its awesome to have a famous cheesesteak company right there in the stadium (Tony Lukes). We’ve been ticket holders for over 25 years #BirdGang.” – KP, advertiser, Wilmington DE
